Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Alex Wilson "Mali Latino"

featuring Alex Wilson piano with Madou Sidiki Diabaté kora, Ahmed Fofana percussion, Doussouba Diabaté vocals.
Well known to Snape audiences as a composer, performer and bandleader, Alex Wilson is a guarantee for danceable and innovative Latin jazz. His latest project, created on an Aldeburgh Residency is that rarest of collaborations; a collision of two musical worlds that creates a genuinely new and thrilling sound. Kora virtuoso Madou Sidiki Diabaté and Malian musicians join forces with a sensational nine-piece band to combine the essence of Afro-Cuban jazz with the exotic harmonies and ancient traditions of West-African music. Expect fiery latin dance patterns mixed with the driving village rhythms of Mali, instrumental virtuosity on kora, piano and African percussion and the startling intensity of mandingue and Cuban vocals. A truly world music project developed in Aldeburgh.

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Marc-André Hamelin

Marc-André Hamelin piano.
Haydn Variations in F minor Hob.XVII:6, Liszt Venezia e Napoli, Alkan Symphonie for solo piano, Fauré Nocturne No.6 Op.63, Mozart Sonata in A minor K.310
Marc-André Hamelin’s reputation as a musical adventurer is allied to an engaging unaffected musicianship. As at home in the classical repertoire as he is in the jaw-dropping virtuosity required in Liszt’s tone poems for piano and Alkan’s epic ‘symphony» this programme shows this most versatile of musicians at his best.
‘Hamelin’s wizardry defies the laws of nature, but it is a mark of his seriousness that he used it only to illuminate the composer’s musical intentions.’ - Financial Times

3rd August
Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Suffolk Youth Orchestra

Phillip Shaw conductor
Borodin Overture, Prince Igor, Delius Summer Evening, Vaughan Williams In the Fen Country, Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5 in E minor
An Anglo-Russian programme of rich contrasts from this outstanding orchestra of local young musicians. Tchaikovsky’s brooding, tempestuous and ultimately triumphant journey from darkness to light and Borodin’s thrilling operatic overture frame two gentler vistas of the English countryside – Delius’delicately-perfumed miniature and the vast skies and open spaces of the Fenland as invoked in Vaughan Williams’‘symphonic impression’.
Venue: Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape, Suffolk IP17 1SP
Time: 7.30pm
Tickets:£16, £13, £10, Prom £6

4th August
Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Blazin’ Fiddles

Catriona Macdonald, Bruce Macgregor, Allan Henderson, Iain Macfarlane and Aidan O’Rourke fiddles, Marc Clement guitar Andy Thorburn keyboard
Traditional Scottish folk
A collective of the Scottish folk scene»s hottest properties, a Fiddles gig is a raucous, whirling celebration of the Highlands and Islands. For, like single malts, the music seems to draw on the distinctive flavours, history and surroundings of the performers’ native homelands. The traditional solo tunes and dances are interrupted and interspersed with riotous explosions of sound as the group join together for dazzling ensemble sets. Illuminated by funny and often touching introductions and spiced with wit and humour, it is an intoxicating brew and an unmissable event for any lover of live traditional music.

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain

Vasily Petrenko conductor Stephen Hough piano
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1, Lutoslawski Concerto for Orchestra, Respighi Feste Romane
The sumptuous sound of one of the world’s great youth orchestras in the warmly resonant acoustic of the Maltings is an overwhelming experience. The NYO bring three works suffused with local colour; Respighi’s opulent score for vast orchestra pays homage to the rituals and public celebrations of Rome, whilst a celebrated British pianist guests in the Slavic lyricism, the grandeur and hushed intimacy of Tchaikovsky’s justly popular concerto. Lutoslawski’s neglected jewel is set to sparkle and delight, an effervescent folk-music inspired showpiece.

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Sweet Chorus: A Tribute to Stéphane Grappelli

John Etheridge guitar Christian Garrick violin Dave Kelbie rhythm guitar Andy Crowd bass
John Etheridge is simply one of the finest guitarists around; inventive, versatile, with a matchless virtuosic technique, feted by audiences and musical peers world-wide. This long-running project plays homage to the great gypsy jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli, with whom Etheridge played for many years. Romantic, joyous, wistful, witty, charged with emotion yet delightfully subtle, the music created by Grappelli and Django Reinhardt and their Hot Club de France is unforgettably distinctive. Etheridge’s peerless collective recreate that sound and spirit with a freshness and affection. An inspiring tribute from one jazz legend to another.

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Curtis Stigers

Curtis Stigers vocals/saxophone Matthew Fries piano Keith Hall drums Cliff Schmitt bass.
Curtis Stigers is at the forefront of a new generation of jazz singers. Throughout his career, Curtis has been celebrated for a surprisingly wide variety of impressive accomplishments – from his early pop chart success with several self-penned, top-ten singles and hit albums and an appearance on the soundtrack for The Bodyguard (one of the biggest selling albums of all time), to Downbeat Magazine naming him as one of the jazz genre’s ‘Rising Male Stars’ and the Times selecting his last jazz recording, You Inspire Me, as the number one album of 2003. He has toured the world in concert with such renowned pop artists as Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Prince, while also sharing the bill with such jazz greats as Nancy Wilson, Randy Brecker, and Toots Thielmans. Stigers’ refusal to stand still, and his consistent desire to grow and evolve musically, has earned him admiration and recognition. In 2007 he was named BBC Radio 2 Jazz singer of the Year.

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Monks of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery

Unquestionably one of the highlights of the 2006 Proms, the return of the Monks promises a further glimpse of a fascinating, and enriching culture. Whilst the act of worship and meditation is at its heart, their residency features extraordinary creativity, historical and cultural detail, colourful and exuberant performance and a warm and winning hospitality.
Sand Mandala
Of all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, painting with coloured sand is the one of the most exquisite. A sand mandala is a breathtaking act of devotion taking days or sometimes weeks to complete. At its conclusion, to symbolise life’s impermanence, the coloured sands are swept up and poured into a nearby river where the waters carry the healing energies throughout the world.

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Gwyneth Herbert

Jazz-chanteuse? Folk-balladeer, Pop-singersongwriter? Difficult to pigeon-hole, but impossible to ignore, Gwyneth Herbert has emerged from being a consummate performer of other people’s music to find success with her own material, and her live performances show why. The voice is bewitching, combining an expressive power with immaculate control, and her songs are vivid and touching. To witness her as lead actress in her own memorable mini-dramas is to be drawn into a world of complex and shifting moods, of fragile understated poetry and strident raw emotion.

Robin Ticciati conductor, Robert Levin piano
Mozart Symphony No .1 in E flat K.16; Piano, Concerto No.22 in E flat K.482; Symphony No.40, in G minor
From the pulsating intensity of his penultimate symphony, to the exhilarating freshness of his first, this programme captures the essence of Mozart. At its centre, renowned performer and Mozart scholar Robert Levin brings his characteristic spontaneity and free approach to the concerto, unusually played here on fortepiano. Together with the dynamic period-instrument and brilliant young conductor Robin Ticciati it promises fascinating fresh insights into some of the composer’s best loved work.

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Tibetan Monks

The monks of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery make a welcome return
An evening of Tibetan music and dance This concert is the climax of a week-long stay in Snape by ten monks from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery – founded in Tibet in the 15th century, re-established in exile in South India three decades ago. The sacred world of Tibet is filled with the chanting of Buddhist texts, the recitation of mantras, the ringing of bells and cymbals, the blowing of long horns and the beating of drums. This evening of music, dance, extraordinary costumes and masks – with explanatory commentary by the group’s UK representative Jane Rasch – will bring alive this astonishing culture.

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Gerhaher sings Schubert

Christian Gerhaher baritone Gerold Huber piano
Schubert Die Schöne Müllerin
Schubert’s cycle is an extraordinary journey mapped in songs of sparkling clarity and rich invention that imbues a seemingly simple story of a young man and his love with all the joy, hope, suffering and pain of the human heart. Gerhaher is a natural, effortless communicator and as anyone who witnessed his 2008 Aldeburgh Lieder masterclasses can testify, his thoughtful, searching approach to both text and music guarantees a vivid concert experience in one of the great song cycles.
‘With his bright, burnished high baritone, expressive diction and alert, unexaggerated response to mood and nuance, Gerhaher confirms his credentials as one of the most probing Lieder singers of the younger generation.’ Gramophone

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Belcea Quartet

Haydn String Quartet in F sharp minor Op.50 No.4, Britten String Quartet No.3 Op.94, Schubert String Quartet in D minor D.810 ‘Death and the Maiden’
For the last decade, no Aldeburgh summer has been complete without a visit from the Belceas. They display a freshness and vitality in performance combined with a keen musical intelligence, astonishing technical command and seemingly telepathic rapport. Haydn’s brilliant, tempestuous quartet is full of unexpected twists and surprisingly dark hues. Britten and Schubert remain at the core of this Quartet’s performing lives, and these two quartets – deeply affecting masterpieces of gripping intensity and unrelenting musical drama – promise chamber music at the very highest level.
‘They are pre-eminent in this repertoire … this was sublime playing, elegantly and eloquently shaped’ Independent on Sunday reviewing performance of Britten quartets

Aldeburgh Music - Snape Proms - Britten–Pears Orchestra

Vasily Petrenko conductor, Christian Gerhaher baritone
Wagner Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Shostakovich Symphony No.1
A genuine new star in British musical life and one of the world’s leading baritones both make their second Proms appearances this season. Petrenko’s vitality and fresh thinking seem well-matched to the white heat and radical originality of the young Shostakovich. The composer’s stunning first symphony quotes Wagner, whose searing, passionate music from Tristan is one of the iconic works in musical history. Emotional intensity and echoes of Wagner too in Mahler’s songs, small masterpieces etched with both deeply affecting melancholy and joyous, carefree simplicity.
