As part of Downham Market’s Festival week, Singers Inspired, the town’s community choir, gave a spirited concert in the Methodist church. Their programme entitled "Decades of Song" spanned the years and the continents, with pieces from as far afield as Africa, the Appalachian mountains of America, and the Torres Strait Islands. The music also encompassed many traditions; from tribal chants, various types of church music and a reggae tune to Eric Clapton’s "Tears In Heaven".
The acoustics in the church were magnificent and the choir enjoyed filling the space with what one member of the audience called "a really joyful sound", adding that "the enthusiasm of the choir had been infectious".
The conductors for the evening were – Sue Reid, Sue Dixon, Rebecca Elliott and Ann Murray. All four of them also members of the choir who had volunteered to lead songs which the group had learned with a number of musical directors over the past few months.
Among those who enjoyed the evening were the deputy mayor – John Fox and his wife deputy mayoress – Margaret Fox.
Singer Inspired is a group of people who love to sing but don’t necessarily have any musical background. All songs are taught by ear and many of the choir do not read music. Details of the choir can be found at www.singersinspired.co.uk
